* * * * *

“So when does she get here?” Chloe asked, settling into her seat at the table and lighting up.

“Sometime tomorrow. She’s lecturing in St. Louis and said she’d call when she’s through. But I’m thinking mid-afternoon.”

“Lecturing? About what?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean, you don’t know!”

“Just that, Chloe,” I said, heading toward the oven. “I didn’t ask and she didn’t say.”

I’d just told a half-truth and couldn’t help but feel a little guilty. While I didn’t know exactly what she was lecturing about, I did know that Calliope Jones was a cultural anthropologist. And I was willing to bet that she was also an artifact specialist of some sort. But at this point, I simply couldn’t say that to Chloe. Admitting as much would’ve opened a whole new realm to my inquisitive friend. And the last thing I needed was for Chloe to bombard the woman with anthropological questions when I needed to discuss magic. It just wouldn’t do. But knowing that didn’t make me feel any better.

Chloe watched me retrieve the last pan of cookies and didn’t bother to speak again until they’d taken up residence on the cooling rack. “Need help with those?”

I grinned. “Little late in asking, aren’t you? Especially now that I’m already done!”

“Well...some of them do look a tad burnt,” she said, craning her neck to peer at the rack, “and there’s no way you’d ever serve those to a guest.” She put out her cigarette in the ashtray and sauntered over to have a better look. “Not a real one anyway. You’d be mortified. So,” she said, peeking over my shoulder, “I was just thinking that you might need some help disposing of those.”

Her tone was serious enough for me to take a look. I gazed at the cookies in horror. The last thing I wanted to do was bake another batch, but if they were scorched...well...I couldn’t very well serve them to Ms. Jones. Sighing heavily, I bent forward to examine them more closely.

Now, cookies are either burned or they’re not, and you don’t have to put them under a microscope to tell. So by the time I’d decided to flip one over, I realized I’d been taken.

“Where?” I demanded playfully.

Chloe didn’t say a word. She just stared at me with wide eyes.

“Just exactly where are they burnt?!” I put my hands on my hips for effect and tried to keep from laughing.

“Right here!” Chloe said. She grabbed the cookie, took a bite and moaned in delight.

Giggling at her tactics and seeing an opportunity to assuage my guilt, I put a half dozen cookies on a plate and handed them to her.

“So, what’s she like?”

“Who?”

She rolled her eyes. “Calliope Jones, silly.”

“Nice enough, and friendly.”

“C’mon, Tess...that’s no answer,” she said between bites. “You could say that about the dog down the street. You could even say that about your crazy neighbor.” She looked at me expectantly.

“Well...I only talked to her for a few minutes,” I said, taking the seat across from her.
